Dog Collar Size Guide: Measure Before You Order

Start with a measurement, not a breed

Two dogs of the same breed can need different collar sizes. Coat, body shape and growth all affect fit. Before choosing a collar, measure your dog’s neck where the collar normally sits with a flexible measuring tape. Keep the tape flat and comfortable rather than pulling it tight. Record the measurement in inches.

Read the instructions for the exact collar you want. Some collars are sold in adjustment ranges, while others ask for a specific neck measurement. Do not automatically add a fixed number of inches unless that product’s instructions tell you to do so. If you use a current collar as a reference, measure its usable inside circumference or follow the maker’s specified measuring points; the full length including a buckle may give the wrong result.

Width is a separate choice

A 2-inch-wide collar is not a size for a 2-inch neck. Width describes the strap from top to bottom; neck size describes the circumference the collar fits. A wider collar needs more room along the length of your dog’s neck. Compare a new width with a collar your dog wears comfortably, and make sure it allows normal movement.

The Everyday line offers polymer-buckle collars in 1-inch and 1.5-inch widths. Ranger offers metal-buckle formats, and Control adds a handle. Fi-compatible Track bands are selected by both neck size and tracker series. Those differences are reasons to use the individual product chart rather than one universal chart.

Read the range for your exact model

The captured Everyday 1.5-inch range is 14–17, 16–20 and 17.5–23.5 inches. The captured Ranger 1.5-inch range additionally includes 19.5–27 inches. Handle collars use other measurements, so do not reuse a range from a different design. These values are product-data references and must be checked against TacticalBark’s finished goods before this guide is published.

If your measurement sits at the edge of a range, or your dog is still growing, contact us before ordering. For a “larger than 26” selection, enter the exact requested neck measurement in Build notes. Do not write only a breed or estimated weight.

Check again when the collar arrives

Check the buckle closes fully, the strap is adjusted correctly and the collar cannot easily slip over the head. Make sure it does not restrict comfortable movement. Recheck fit during growth or coat changes. Inspect the webbing, stitching and hardware regularly and replace damaged equipment.

Ranges are the usable neck circumference the collar adjusts across. Specific sizes are the neck measurement the collar is built to, with a little adjustment either side.
